A Call for Creators

Mutual Subjects - A show of paired portraits

Can you capture the essence of a person? A painted face, a poem about someone's hands, a sculpture of a silhouette, a photograph of someone's workspace — all of it.

Mutual Subjects is a paired portrait show where every creator is both the artist and the subject. You'll be matched with another accepted creator, and the two of you will portray each other. What "portrait" means is wide open. Paint, poetry, sculpture, photography, fiber, whatever your medium is — if it captures a person, it belongs here. We welcome creators of all kinds.

The show is a continuation of Trading Faces, the first show Moth and Todd E Clark curated together and the start of their friendship. Making a new friend isn't a requirement, but we hope it becomes part of your experience too.

The Details

The show runs August 29 through September 13, 2026 at Mycelium Gallery. Accepted creators pay a $15 fee to the gallery. Mycelium Collective members pay $5.

A few ground rules:

  • Your work must be made by you, for this show.

  • Every piece needs to stay physically present in the gallery for the full run and be available for purchase.

  • Size guidelines will be shared with accepted creators.

We'll accept as many creators as we can, but because this is a paired show with limited space, we can't take everyone who applies.

How it works

Apply. If you're accepted, you'll hear from us by July 22 and pay your fee by July 27. Once fees are in, we'll assign partner pairs by July 29. From there you'll have about four weeks to create your portrait. Finished work is due to Mycelium Gallery by Thursday, August 27.

One important thing about pairs

Getting your finished portrait to the gallery on time is your responsibility. Because this is a paired show, your work and your partner's hang together — if one portrait doesn't arrive, both creators are affected. The August 27 deadline is firm, since the gallery hangs the show over the following day and a half. By applying, you're committing to these deadlines and to telling the curators and your partner right away if something comes up. We know life happens. What matters is that you speak up early so we can help sort it out.

Be the artist and the muse.
